ABOUT US
The role of the Norfolk Island Governance Committee (NIGC) is to provide decisions, advice and recommendations on the future governance of Norfolk Island.
The NIGC membership includes three democratically elected community representatives, the Norfolk Island Administrator, one representative from the Australian Government and one representative from the Queensland Government.

GOVERNANCE TRANSITION
The NIGC is dedicated to assisting Norfolk Island in its transition to a new governance model. We work with government and service delivery partners, in consultation with the Norfolk Island people to ensure the best outcomes for the community.

Each community representative brings a breadth and depth of local knowledge and experience to the position that will be instrumental in helping shape the direction of Norfolk Island going forward.

Senator Andrew McLachlan CSC recently spoke about the tabling of the Joint Standing Commitee on the National Capital and External Territories report for the inquiry into local governance on Norfolk Island.

The report titled: Restoring Democracy, explores ways in which to return democracy to the people of Norfolk Island and is available online.
TERMS OF REFENCE
Building a Better Future for Norfolk Island
The terms of reference for the operation of the NIGC provide:

A description of the role of the NIGC.

A prescribed process for determining NIGC membership.

An agreed charter by which the NIGC will conduct its business and oversight its performance.
The role of the NIGC will conclude once the new Norfolk Island governance body is operational and the
committee will terminate.

The NIGC works with a variety of partners to facilitate a successful transition to Norfolk Island's new governance model. Our partners include the Australian and Queensland Governments, service-delivery partners, local community organisations, and the people of Norfolk Island.
